Redouté and His Roses

Redouté's roses are everywhere - on posters, coffee cups, in interior decoration in motion pictures -- even mouse pads.  I admit to having several prints hanging in my own home. But how much do we know about the artist?  In a post on the artist at Tea at Trianon, Elena Maria Vidal writes:
Since both Marie-Antoinette and Empress Josephine had an interest in gardens it is not surprising that each patronized the botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Redouté survived the Revolution to become famous in the Napoleonic era. He is particularly famous for his exquisite roses and lilies.
