Easter Octave Art Series: Regina Caeli Prayer

During Eastertide, we pray the Regina Caeli prayer instead of the Angelus at the appropriate hours of 6 a.m., noon, and 6 p.m.  The prayer begins "Queen of Heaven, rejoice, allelulia." Thus it celebrates the Resurrection. The seasonal change in prayers is because the Angelus pertains to the Annunciation whereas the Regina Caeli pertains to the Resurrection. The prayer can be found below in both English and Latin.

This unusual depiction of Our Lady, Queen of Heaven by Blasco de Granen is located in the Museo de Bellas Artes, Zaragosa, Spain.  From Wikimedia Commons.

Regina Caeli (English)

V. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia.

R. For he whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.

V. Has risen, as he said, alleluia.

R. Pray for us to God, alleluia.

V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.

R. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

V. Let us pray. O God, who gave joy to the world through the resurrection of Thy Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ Our Lord.

R. Amen.

Regina Caeli (Latin)

V. Regina caeli, laetare, alleluia.

R. Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.

V. Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia.

R. Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

V. Gaude et laetare, Virgo Maria, alleluia.

R. Quia surrexit Dominus vere, alleluia.

V. Oremus.

R. Amen
